Lady, be not a fool And cease your tired longing Only fools love foolishly; It’s your pain you are prolonging Pining for an unrequited heart For a fool who will never truly know The measure and breadth and depth Of the treasures that you bestow Lady, cease this tragedy As there is nothing quite so sad As a woman in love unrequited Nothing quite so bad As a woman’s love unreturned Wasted effort and wasted time All that shivering and sighing Showering pearls amongst a swine
